Your eFoil Season Prep Checklist: How to Get Your Fliteboard Ready to Ride
A little prep work before the season goes a long way. This checklist walks through everything from Flitecell storage and firmware updates to yearly service and gear upgrades, so your first ride of the 2026 season is spent on foil and not troubleshooting on the dock.

We get this question a lot: "What should I do to get ready for the upcoming season?" It's a good one. Your eFoil has been sitting in storage, the water is warming up, and you're ready to get back on the lake!
Start With the Flitecell: Battery Storage and Pre-Season Charging
The Flitecell (like any battery after a long dormant period) deserves the most attention heading into a new season.
For long-term storage, Flite recommends keeping the Flitecell at around 50% charge. The best way to achieve this is to discharge the battery on your last ride of the season, then connect via the Flite App and monitor the charge state until it hits roughly 50% - at which point you can stop the charging process. Sitting at 50% is the sweet spot for long-term battery health.
As the season approaches, charge the battery up to around 70% several weeks to a month before your first planned ride. Timing does matter: Flitecells begin to self-balance above 60% charge. Getting to 70% gives that self-balancing process time to fully complete before you're out on the water. If you skip this step and head straight to a full charge on day one, you might notice the battery percentage dropping quickly at the very start of a session. This typically signals that the cells haven't balanced yet. If that happens, charging to above 70% between rides will let the self-balancing process catch up.

Charge and Update Your Flite Controller
Unlike the Flitecell, the Flite Controller doesn't have a specific storage charge recommendation. That said, controllers tend to drain sitting unused for months, so give it a full charge before your first session.
More importantly, use this time to update to the latest firmware. Here's how:
- Open the Flite App with the controller on or charging
- Go to Devices > Flite Controller
- Once connected, look for an orange dot next to Version. This indicates that an update is available
- Select it and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update
Once updated, take a few minutes to confirm your settings are dialed in: propulsion type (prop or jet), rider mode (light rider or normal), and any top speed limits you want in place. If you want to change the units displayed on the controller, that can also be done through the Flite App while connected.

Update Your eFoil Firmware
Firmware updates are worth checking at the start of every season, and periodically throughout. Flite pushes improvements and fixes regularly, so staying current keeps your ride smooth.
To check for updates, connect to your eFoil in the Flite App and go to Devices > eFoil (or whatever you've named yours). Again, orange indicators next to Software Version and eFoil Version mean updates are available. Note that you may need to update one or both, because they're separate. Also keep in mind that your Flite Controller and eFoil should both be running the latest version, so run updates on both before heading out.
Sync Your Rides and Explore the Flite App
Once updates are done, it's worth spending a few minutes in the app. Sync your rides on the eFoil and you'll get access to a solid set of stats from your sessions like GPS routes, distance traveled, top speed, lean angles, and more. There's also a feature that shows where other riders are riding nearby, which is a nice way to discover new spots or connect with other eFoilers in the area.
Schedule Your Yearly Service Before the Season Rush
Flite requires service every 100 hours or once a year (whichever comes first) to maintain the two-year warranty. Even after the warranty period ends, staying current on service is a smart investment in keeping your eFoil running reliably for years - just the same as any other vehicle.
The yearly service covers a full seal, o-ring, and oil change, along with gore vent and anode replacement (if needed). It also includes inspection of connectors, mast, and cables, plus a leak test to make sure water ingress isn't a concern. Firmware updates can be bundled in as well if you'd prefer to have that handled at the same time.
One thing to keep in mind: in-season scheduling fills up quickly. If you missed fall service, or this is coming up on your first annual, the best time to reach out is before the season hits full swing. We do our best to accommodate everyone, but getting on the calendar early means you won't lose riding time waiting for a service window.

Gear Up and Keep Progressing
If you've got the basics dialed in and are wondering what's next, there are a lot of ways to keep developing as a rider.
Wings are one of the most impactful upgrades you can make. Different wings offer very different riding characteristics: faster and more responsive for riders chasing speed and deep carves, or larger and more relaxed for covering distance and enjoying the scenery. If you're not sure which direction to go, we're happy to walk through the options based on how you like to ride.
Boards are another area where riders often find meaningful improvement as they progress. Smaller, lighter options become more approachable once you've built some fundamentals, and they open up a more dynamic riding experience. There's also a growing trend toward lighter, more compact battery configurations. The Flitecell Sport or Flitecell Nano is a great option if carving is your priority, and pairing it with one of our fast chargers helps you maximize ride count on a day out.
If you're still building confidence or want to ride with more peace of mind, we also stock Flite impact vests for riders who want the added protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What happens if I skip the yearly service?
A: Skipping the annual service doesn't mean your eFoil will immediately have problems, but it does put your warranty coverage at risk and increases the chance of catching a small issue like a worn seal, degraded o-ring, or developing connector issue only after it's become a bigger one. The inspection alone is worth it for catching things early.
Q: How do I know if my Flitecell cells have finished balancing?
A: The most common sign that cells haven't balanced yet is a quick drop in displayed battery percentage right at the start of a ride, or immediately after plugging the battery into the efoil. If you see that, continue charging to above 70% between sessions and give the self-balancing process more time to work. It usually resolves within a few charge cycles.
Q: Can firmware updates be done as part of the yearly service?
A: Yep, we can handle firmware updates on both the eFoil and Flite Controller as part of the service if that's easier than doing it at home. Just let us know when you reach out to schedule.
